Bushmills, North of Ireland - Dunluce Castle (Part 1) - August 2025

After Belfast (see linked blog entries), our tour took us next to Dunluce Castle in Bushmills, also in the North of Ireland.

Dunluce Castle was the seat of the family MacDonnell, built in the 13th century. It is obviously in ruins now (as you can see from the photos below), but those ruins have had a pretty good run in pop culture. It's thought that the castle is the inspiration for Cair Paravel in the Chronicles of Narnia series. It appears in the inside of Led Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy album cover (that album will be mentioned again in a future blog).

It looked less like this when we were there, but it may have just been time of day.

Additionally, the exterior was used in some exterior shots of Pyke (of House Greyjoy) in the Game of Thrones TV series (obviously not the books). I think it also has a poem written about it. Anyway, it's a pretty kick-ass castle, so I was really excited to get to visit.

Here are some initial photos of the castle.

Ruins of an old stone castle with moss patches, under a cloudy sky. Green grass visible in the foreground, creating a historic atmosphere.

We got to walk through this amazing hole in the wall. Unfortunately, we had to walk behind these Kansas State fans. I think we cleared the Feng shui when we walked in after them.

Not bad, am I right?
A metal plaque with a Viking ship engraving is mounted on a railing. A rocky landscape with a distant ruin and cloudy sky is in the background.

My name is Angie.  I find normal to be largely boring.  I am really lucky to get to spend time behind my camera doing all kinds of fun things, and also super-really annoying my kids by taking a million photos of them.
