Dublin, Ireland - St. Patrick's Cathedral (Part 2) - August 2025

Dublin's St. Patrick's Cathedral is a pretty classic example of Early English Gothic architecture. It has the traditional cruciform layout, flying buttresses (which is just a great phrase), ribbed vaults, and some towers that were added on some 600 years after its creation between 1220 and 1260. It is the oldest church in Ireland, and is standing on the grounds of an earlier church where it was near a holy well where supposedly St. Patrick baptized converts. No information is known on if the ground was formerly inhabited by snakes.

Gothic cathedral interior with vaulted ceilings and stained glass windows. Pews occupied by people, one person standing. Illuminated, serene mood.
Pretty classic ribbed faulting. I think this is taken from the nave, where the main doors to enter were stationed and where the congregation sits, looking toward Lady Chapel up in the apse. (Wow, "up in the apse" sounded like vulgarity, sorry.) However, I didn't really mark any of that well in the photos or anything.

The transepts of a cruciform church are the arms on either side, forming the "t" shape. This is one of the transepts, I believe one to the left maybe.
Dimly lit cathedral hall with stained glass window, statues, and arched ceiling. Two people stand beneath lights, adding a serene mood.
This little hallway ran parallel to the nave, as is pretty traditional. Less traditional is the just blown-out commercialization of the shop. They had ISU and Kansas State gear that was branded for the cathedral, which was a touch... gross.

I think this guy is the alpha of the statues.

See? Vaguely unseemly.
Cathedral interior with colorful stained glass windows, arched ceilings, and hanging flags. The atmosphere is reverent and historic.
The flags were fascinating in this transept. The stained glass was huge - I don't want to sound picky, but it wasn't the prettiest one I've ever seen, to be blunt.
Stained glass windows in a cathedral with colorful patterns illuminate medieval banners hanging from stone walls, creating a solemn atmosphere.
Stained glass windows in a cathedral with colorful patterns illuminate archways and tattered flags. A plaque reads "Battalion...1945-8".
"The same thing, but develop it for that one lone window."
Candles lit in a dim setting on a black stand with gold holders, creating a serene atmosphere. Background is blurred with soft lighting.

M's candle from another angle. I do like how, at this angle, you can tell that their main system for making sure the church doesn't go up in flames is some tin foil.

My name is Angie.  I find normal to be largely boring.  I am really lucky to get to spend time behind my camera doing all kinds of fun things, and also super-really annoying my kids by taking a million photos of them.
