Iowa Arboretum - Madrid, Iowa - September 2025

I photographed a friend's daughter's wedding this past fall at the Iowa Arboretum. I hadn't been there in decades, so I wandered around for a while prior to the wedding to see what was around. It was very pretty!

Close-up of a yellow flower with a purple center against a blurred green background, creating a serene, nature-inspired mood.
Look at those little finger-petals!
Yellow daisies with dark centers against a blurred green background, one in focus.
It's sort of like a daisy kaleidoscope!
Close-up of a white flower with yellow center against a blurred green background. Soft lighting creates a tranquil mood.
Peekaboo!
White flower and bud in focus, set against a blurred green background, capturing a serene and natural atmosphere.
Google tells me this is called a White Cosmos. I just love the rogue petals around the pistil.
Pink flower in focus against a clear blue sky. Other flowers blur in the background. Sunlight creates soft shadows on petals. Romantic mood.
And a pink Cosmos! Or lavender, maybe?
Bee on vibrant pink flower with yellow center, blurred green background. Bright, sunny, and calm setting.
I found a bee! Always a good day.
Brown butterfly on purple flowers with a blurred green and orange background. Bright colors create a vibrant, natural mood.
This butterfly looks like a couch in someone's grandma's basement from the '70s.
Weeping willow tree with long green branches overhanging a small pond. Sunlight filters through foliage, creating a serene, natural scene.
When I was little, I wanted a weeping willow so badly. Now I think they're sort of depressing. Also, is there a lot of upkeep? Do the leaves just naturally stop at the ground, or do you have to trim them? I could also Google this, but probably won't.
Close-up of a faded orange flower with a dark center, surrounded by blurred yellow flowers in the background, creating a warm, soft mood.
I love this coneflower in its final stages.
Close-up of a single foxtail grass with bright yellow flowers blurred in the background, creating a vibrant, sunny mood.
And some foxtail to wrap it up. I don't think maybe this was their main takeaway at the arboretum, but he has personality.

I'm a member of the Iowa Arboretum and it is definitely one of the hidden gems of Iowa. Also the largest arboretum in Iowa. My only real complaints are that my membership only gets me in. And the hours are atrocious. But other than that an amazing place. (Plus my membership gets me into a ton of other gardens for free.

Did you get a chance to check out the treehouse while you were there? It is a really cool place and I don't know any other place that has something similar.

My name is Angie.  I find normal to be largely boring.  I am really lucky to get to spend time behind my camera doing all kinds of fun things, and also super-really annoying my kids by taking a million photos of them.
