Ames, Iowa - Dragonflies and Flowers - July 2025

Since J and I have lots of meetings during the work day and can't get away, we try to get the children on hikes when it isn't swelteringly hot. McFarland Park has fun trails and lots of nature, so we have gone out there several times.

These photos are from a trip on July 3, as I had the day off. It was incredibly hot, but we still had fun.

I love this photo of this guy's wings. It's too bad there's not more color like on the blue ones, but I love me a dragonfly.

Great pictures! Not enough people appreciate insects. Particularly ants. They probably aren't actually fighting though. They are probably feeding each other. Ants have a social stomach where they keep liquid food to feed other ants. It is called trophallaxis. Ants are such amazing creatures and it is too bad they weren't ruling the planet instead of the failed human species.

I freaking love insects - I've learned how to taxidermy and pin them when they die naturally. (I refuse to hurt them, because they're badass.) That's fantastic about ants - I never knew that!! It's like bees - bees and ants together could build much better nations than we have.

My name is Angie.  I find normal to be largely boring.  I am really lucky to get to spend time behind my camera doing all kinds of fun things, and also super-really annoying my kids by taking a million photos of them.
